The fall 2016 DAMR-conference was devoted to research on Urban Refugees and took place on 18 November at Tilburg University and organised by Tesseltje de Lange or Lisa Berntsen. The first part of the conferences focused on urban migrants and informal practices. Louise Bonneau & Lieneke Slingenberg (Free University Amsterdam) discussed (informal) migrant settlements and the right to respect for a home, while Sjors Joosten from Wageningen University focused on the daily life experiences of African migrants in Barcelona. The inspiring keynote speech given by Tesseltje de Lange (Tilburg University/University of Amsterdam) contemplated on the role of volunteer work and the ways in which we approach the refugee question. The second part of the conference focused on urban and rural responses to immigrants. Aslan Zorlu from University of Amsterdam discussed attitudes towards asylum seekers in small local communities in the Netherlands, and researchers from Maastricht University in response discussed the role of art, businesses and global cities in integrating immigrants and refugees.
